DEMHS: Radiological Emergency Preparedness

Radiological Emergency Preparedness

The CT Office of Emergency Management’s Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) unit is responsible for off-site planning and preparedness for Millstone Nuclear Power Station located in Waterford, CT.

The REP program develops and maintains radiological plans and procedures. These plans and procedures are federally evaluated during drills/exercises on a regular basis by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). A network of ten emergency planning zone communities, five host communities, numerous key state agencies and utility emergency responders all maintain a high level of preparedness and public safety.

In addition to plans and exercises, the REP program: conducts annual public official conferences, annual media briefings, training of state and local emergency workers, publication of public information brochures and materials (including information on emergencies located in telephone directories around the power plant), working with private organizations to develop letters of agreement in support of emergency services and resources, and ensures that federal guidelines and requirements are completed every year.
